Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur is one of the individuals who might stake a new claim as Gareth Southgate trims down his England team in preparation for the World Cup. On Wednesday, October 19, 33 days before the tournament’s opening in Qatar, Southgate is expected to announce his preliminary team. There is still time to collect – or lose – those places on the plane, with some major talking points from across the board over the international break. The final 26-man roster must be presented to FIFA by Sunday, November 13th.

Following a nearly two-year absence from the international stage, Dier had earned the scorn of some, but his selection for the Nations League matches against both Germany and Italy marks a significant shift in the narrative. Although Southgate’s defence is full, Dier’s most recent call-up is well-deserved for those who paid attention to his commanding displays in the midst of Spurs’ back three under Antonio Conte. Dier played almost every moment of Spurs’ 2021–2022 Premier League season, except for three absences due to injury. This helped Spurs steal Champions League qualification from Arsenal.

He has so far played every second of the Premier League and League Cup games this season. After the recent 6-2 victory over Leicester, Dier acknowledged that it seemed unlikely that he would be called up for the Sept. international break. He thanked Antonio Conte, whom he referred to as “the godfather” of Juventus’ existing system, for receiving him back on track. While goalie Fraser Forster is unlikely to be called up for the World Cup given the line of goalkeepers before him, Harry Kane is the closest thing to a guarantee of being on the plane of any player.
